Just Another Day

Presidents have their own day, as do flags and even migrate birds. But what about museums? Believe it or not, May 8 is the 28th International Museum Day. The event is held in selected countries every year and, this time, it’s Germany’s turn. Munich museums, not surprisingly, are throwing themselves into the event, which this year has the theme “Museums Building Bridges,” in an attempt to show the public the challenges museums face in maintaining their cultural service to society. Go on, show them you love them by attending some of the events planned!
The Deutsches Museum (Museuminsel 1) will be holding special Albert Einstein tours, including one in English at 3 pm. If you’d like to visit the Alps without leaving the city, check out the Alpines Museum (Praterinsel 5), which is running a sensory spectacular, in connection with its exhibition “Mit der Nase in die Berge.” The hands-on day will give visitors the chance to experience the sounds, smells, tastes and sights of the Alps. The Bayerisches Nationalmuseum (Prinzregentenstr. 3) has something for the young and not so young. Take the kids to see the “Rusty Knight—Squeaky Helmut” (Rosten Ritter-Quietschen Helme) tour at 11 am and then pop in for the Jan Polack or the Art Nouveau tours at 2 pm. The Staatliches Museum Ägyptischer Kunst (Hofgartenstr. 1) has a whole day of tours and exhibitions planned and the Museum Villa Stuck (Prinzregentenstr. 60) is offering discounted entrance to exhibitions and guided tours.
