December 2006

Happy New Year

For those who plan ahead, New Year’s Eve can be one of the greatest nights of the year; for those who don’t, it can be one of the most depressing. Even those with the smallest of budgets can gather together some friends on the Isar bridges or on Olympiaberg to watch the fireworks. Here are some other destinations where you’re sure to be blissed out—and a bit warmer—when the countdown begins.

The Hotel Bayerischer Hof isn’t just celebrating 2007, but also its recent award-winning accomplishments (covered in last month’s issue). It’s fitting, then, that they will host not one but almost ten different parties this December 31. The offerings include something for every Munich resident: from a € 38 party-hopper ticket, to the € 420 seven-course dinner in the super-chic rooftop Blue Spa. See www.bayerischerhof.de, or call Tel. 212 00 for information on all the options.

Mark’s Restaurant at the Mandarin Oriental will host a New Year’s gala with a special six-course menu—a “fireworks show for the tastebuds” by star cook Mario Corti. Beginning at 8 pm with a foie gras and quail trilogy and king crab, avocado and curry oil composition, the menu will move on to jumbo shrimp in an olivetti tomato essence, Breton monkfish on braised muscat pumpkin with black gnocchi, medallions of French veal with fried asparagus and Perigord truffles. Dessert offerings will include a blood orange delice with champagne butteries and petit fours. At midnight, there will be a champagne toast and fireworks on the roof terrace. The “United Munich” band will provide musical accompaniment throughout the gala, for which tickets cost € 285 per person. Call Tel. 29 09 88 62 for reservations.

Early birds can get a jump on the celebrations at a New Year’s Gala Concert with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, in the Herkulessaal of the Residenz at 3 pm. Tickets are on sale at VVK outlets for € 29–57.

Revelers will celebrate over the roofs of Munich at 8 Seasons (Maximilianstrasse 2). Local nightlife superstars Renaissance Clubbing have planned a huge blowout with eight DJs, a buffet, fireworks, go-go dancers and a fortune teller, who’ll give you a glimpse of the year to come. Tickets cost € 10, and are available at www.clubstars.net.

Guests to the Tollwood Hot Rhythm New Year’s Party will dance into 2007 accompanied by Brazil Connection, Aquarelas do Brasil, DJ Juaco and other spicy acts. Music begins at 9 pm, and tickets, € 17, can be purchased by calling Tel. 0700-38 38 50 24.
