Landscapes of Time

The title of the upcoming exhibition at Lenbachhaus satellite Kunstbau is itself worth a minute of reflection: “The Space that Time Forgot.” Visitors will encounter more of those tilted perspectives on space and time inside Angela Bulloch’s cosmos. The Canadian artist—based in London and Berlin—has created terrestrial and extraterrestrial views on the starry sky. Together, they are a testament to the impossibility of surveying the order of the universe from one perspective. Bulloch explores questions of astronomy and the distribution of visual information. Such meditations on the universe are admittedly not as accessible as other forms of art. A German-English catalogue will guide you through the brush of enigmatic philosophical musings to an understanding of these exceptional pieces of art, which renowned German art professor Hans Dieter Huber calls “one of the first highlights of contemporary art in the 21st century.” The exhibition opens on February 18. Another exhibition dealing with concepts of time will be on display at the Aspekte Gallery in Gasteig through March 16. Photographers and video artists have set out to make the phenomenon of “Time” and its momentary states visible. The individual results constitute an eclectic array that only can be summarized by the exhibition’s motto, borrowed from Thornton Wilder: “It is only in appearance that time is a river. It is rather a vast landscape and it is the eye of the beholder that moves.” The exhibition “Zeit!” can be viewed daily from 10 am to 10 pm. <<<
