Adolph Menzel

Most exhibitions of artistic works endeavor to present representative highlights or associate works in a historical context. The upcoming exhibition “radikal real,” however, will take a different approach in dealing with the oeuvre of Adolph Menzel (1815–1905). Menzel is predominantly remembered for his historical paintings and graphic works, but this exhibition will focus on the artist’s process of development. During his life, Menzel filled numerous sketchbooks with his impressions of everyday objects, his life in high-society Berlin, and striking self-portraits, all of which will be displayed at the Hypo-Kunsthalle from May 16 through August 31. A novelty of the exhibition will be the opportunity for visitors to digitally browse through some of Menzel’s sketchbooks, instead of viewing just a single selected page in a display case. <<<
