Munich Bloomsday

Bloomsday is one of the very few anniversaries honoring events that never took place. On June 16, 1904, the fictional character Leopold Bloom strolled the streets of Dublin, his trail, thoughts and doings comprising the novel Ulysses by James Joyce. Today, Joyceans annually retrace Bloom’s odyssey through the Irish capital. Here in Munich, Joyce and his novel—but also such other Irish writers as Oscar Wilde and Seamus Heaney—will be celebrated in the Wirtshaus zum Isartal on Munich’s own Bloomsday. Senator David Norris will read from his studies on Joyce, and later on the Munich Céilí Band will delight the audience with traditional Irish tunes. May 31 is a little earlier than the actual Bloomsday, but purists probably will play along. For more information, see www.munichbloomsday.de. <<<
