Open-Air Theater

Munich theaters are internationally renowned institutions and architectural gems. Still, the summer months present the opportunity to explore the potential of open-air scenery and natural lighting, for those who make theater and those who watch it.
Each weekend during July, the Münchner Sommertheater will present Helden (originally titled Arms and the Man) by George Bernard Shaw. In this entrancing comedy, Shaw mocks the false pathos of war, glory, honor and heroism. The play will be presented at the amphitheater of the English Garden, which is located near the subway station U6 Alte Heide and Bus stop 187 Rümelinstrasse. In case of rain, the production will be relocated to the Mohr Villa at Situlistrasse 73. For a detailed schedule of the performances—all of which are free—visit www.muenchner-sommertheater.de.
Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a perennial favorite among open-air companies, but nonetheless a great delight on each showing. This year, students of the Bavarian Theater Academy will present the entertaining confusions of loving couples and the hilarious acting attempts of Shakespeare’s groups of artisans. The production will take place between July 17 and August 8 at the renaissance courtyard Alte Münze, which is located between Marienhof and Platzl in the city center. Tickets cost € 18–24, and can be purchased at VVK outlets, as well as online at www.theaterakademie.de, where all performance dates are listed. <<<
