English-language tours through museums

Although we regularly praise Munich’s museums and their exhibitions, very few of these institutions offer guided tours in English. The Münchner Volkshochschule — the city’s community school, which has offered excellent German-language tours of the city’s major museums for years — is stepping up its efforts to pick up the slack. On request, the school will now organize English-language tours of the Alte and the Neue Pinakothek, the Ethnological Museum (Staatliches Museum für Völkerkunde) and the Museum Villa Stuck. Artist Franz von Stuck’s remarkable Jugendstil villa, a surprisingly under-visited city gem, features turn-of-the-century German works and changing exhibitions of mostly contemporary art. A guided tour of any of the four museums costs DM 200 for a maximum of 25 people and is about 90 minutes in duration. Tours should be booked at least two weeks in advance.
