Roman Holiday

Perhaps you will hear the rhythmic footfall of legions of feet on the move, or the sound of rocks being hewn and cut for the road, most likely though you will just hear lots of wonderful silence as you cycle along the Via Julia, our best known local Roman road, which once led from Augsburg (Augusta Vindelicum) to Salzburg (Iuvavum) and has recently been—in part at least—recreated as cycle path. For under € 10 you can buy a detailed cycle guide Radwandern auf den Spuren der Römerstrasse - Via Julia from book shops which will show you not only the route to take by bicycle, but also where your path deviates from the original Roman route. Though the guide is in German the maps are easy to follow and anyone with a basic grasp of the language will be able to pick up the local sights that are listed for each area. Being so close to home the Via Julia can be cycled in small segments or as a whole depending on the time available.
