Bar of the Month: CORD

Cord has earned cool status very quickly since it sprung onto the Munich bar scene in March. Think retro après-ski bar—wooden walls and floors, big 1970s disco lights, a mirrored ceiling and boxes of geraniums on the walls, which some may say goes a bit too far. A young, casual crowd can be found stretching out on the brown leather day beds, sipping cocktails and just chilling, baby. That’s when they’re not entranced by the bar’s biggest wow factor—its view over Sonnenstrasse and Karlsplatz. Ok, it might not be Fifth Avenue, but through a 270-degree window the glittering lights from the street below are pretty funky. So, too, is the music, with an undemanding yet uplifting sound of funk and the 1960s. The atmosphere is infectious and relaxed, which comes as a surprise considering that Cord is such a magnet for Munich’s beautiful people. But it’s not just the customers who are chilled. Laid back bar staff are happy to tab up your drinks all night. And even then the bill won’t force you out of your new found inner calm, with beer from € 2.80, Prosecco € 3.80 and cocktails from € 6.90. The variety of wine and beer is slightly limited, but Cord does boast an impressive list of cocktails. The die-hard selection features the “Atomic Café.” If that rings any bells, it’s because Cord’s owners also set up other Munich bars Atomic Café, Wunderbar and Spiegelzelt to name but a few. Yet with this location I’d say they’ve really struck a cord.
