Address Book Secrets

Avinash Pandey, Indian General Consul, reveals his favorite spots in and around Munich

Kartoffelhaus
I tend to eat mainly vegetarian food and I love potatoes, so this is the place for me. They do a great potato soup, but I try and work my way through the menu, rather than stick to one thing.

Hochbrückenstrasse 3

Walchensee
I know most people head to Starnberg for a day by a lake, but I prefer to go somewhere quieter, away from the crowds. Walchensee is a really beautiful spot.

Winklstüberl
This is a real gem. It’s about 60 km outside Munich, but the cakes are beautiful. They’re definitely worth the trip out there, and the drive is nice too—the scenery’s lovely. This is my favorite place to go when I’ve got a quiet afternoon to myself.
Café Winklstüberl, between Elbach and Fischbachau

Spatenhaus an der Oper
Again, it’s all about views. I love to get a table on the first floor, where I can look out on Munich’s principal opera house, the Nationaltheater. It’s a wonderful sight.
Spatenhaus an der Oper
Residenzstrasse 12

Seehaus Biergarten
This is where you’ll find me on a sunny day—it’s one of my favorite beer gardens. I always take some bread along to feed the ducks.
