Did you know...
For those who can’t get enough of Bavaria’s museums and constantly crave new information about current exhibitions, Info Point—Museums & Palaces in Bavaria in Alter Hof 1 (Tel. 21 01 40 50) is the place to head for. There you can learn about museums’ collections, their addresses, opening hours, special exhibitions, guided tours, activities and much more. Their extensive database on the Internet is just as helpful: www.museen-in-bayern.de. Info Point is open Mon.–Fri. 10 am–6 pm and
Sat. 10 am–1 pm.
It’s story time in Schwabing. The Schwabing Stadtbibliothek has launched a twice-monthly English story-telling session for children aged 3 to 6. For half an hour, youngsters can listen to tales read by American primary school teacher Jodi Mates. This month’s sessions will be held at 4 pm on May 9 and May 23 in the library at Hohenzollernstrasse 16.
Ever get the impression you can’t move because of all the tourists? It’s not surprising. Munich is attracting ever more visitors, with the number of tourists having increased by 8.2 percent to 3.7 million last year. The city was most popular among American guests, followed by Italians and Brits. And, by all accounts, things look set to get even busier this year and next, thanks to the National Garden Show (BUGA) and the World Cup. But, hey, we really shouldn’t complain—tourism accounts for 62,000 jobs, making up almost 8 percent of Munich’s overall employment.
Eyes down—it’s time for a bit of history. The Haidhausen Museum is running an exhibition entitled “Bingo at the Hofbräukeller,” which focuses on the American occupation of Munich in 1945. As well as their official duties, it seems soldiers indulged in a spot of, you guessed it, bingo at the Hofbräukeller, billiards at the Bürgerbräu brewery in Rosenheimerstrasse and doubtless many more enriching activities. It’s all interesting stuff and it’s on show until the middle of the month at the museum at Kirchenstrasse 24. Catch the exhibition on Sun. 2 pm–6 pm or Mon., Tues. and Wed., 4 pm–6 pm. Tel. 448 52 92 for more details. <<<
