Sound of Music

The nights may be getting shorter as summer approaches—but culturally, they’re getting longer. Yes, the first “Lange Nacht” of the season is upon us, with the “Lange Nacht der Musik” on May 7. More than 100 establishments around the city will be putting on special events to mark the occasion, covering a vast range of musical styles. Highlights include the piano marathon at Piano Haus Lang on Landsbergerstrasse, featuring a performance of Erik Satie’s “Vexation.” This composition has just four lines, repeated, very slowly, 840 times and, although it was composed in 1843, it wasn’t first performed until 70 years later. On May 7, a group of Munich music students and their teachers will play the piece in shifts, with the whole thing expected to take 14 hours. If you’re after something less sleep-inducing, jump on board the Ois is Blues tram, where the group Wipe Out will be entertaining passengers with classic rock, oldies and blues. The tram, which will be fitted with a bar, will be circling the city via Sendlinger Tor, Isartor, Max-Weber-Platz, the Maxmonument, Lenbachplatz and Karlsplatz (Stachus). Tickets cost € 15, which includes admission to all events. For more details see www.muenchner.de/musiknacht. <<<
