Feeling flowery?
Feeling flowery? Munich certainly is. With the German National Garden Show (BUGA)
being hosted in the city, numerous establishments have picked up on the
flower theme for their current exhibitions. Here’s our pick of the bunch:
Chicago artist Andrew Young not only turns to nature as his muse, he also uses it as his artistic material—making his pigments from stones that he’s ground up himself. Young’s work, which features collages of plants, birds and insects, contrasts the curves of nature with straight, geometric backgrounds and is on show at the Amerika Haus from June 9 to September 16. The exhibition is open Mon.–Fri., 10 am–6 pm and Weds., until 8 pm.

Things are coming up roses at Munich’s Botanical Garden this month. From June 24 to 27, the gardens at Nymphenburg Palace host “Roses for Europe,” which is dedicated to the most romantic of flowers. As well as floral displays, a rose market and various presentations, the event also features a rose garden designed by English garden architect Christopher Bradley-Hole, which was awarded a prize for the best garden at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2004. The rose show is open daily from 9 am to 6:30 pm, and until 10 pm on Friday, June 24. Admission costs € 4 for adults
and € 2 for concessions.
Villa Stuck plays host to another flowery exhibition this month. “Lettera Amorosa” features a collection of flower and plant motifs painted by 20th-century artist Georges Braque to illustrate poems by his
contemporary Surrealist poet René Char. The delicate works are on show until
October 9, from 11 am to 6 pm, Weds.–Sun.

Splash out this summer—with a trip to the new exhibition at Munich’s Kunsthalle. From June 3 to August 21, the gallery in the Fünf Höfe will be featuring 70 works of art, all related to water. The paintings featured in it, by such disparate artists as Canaletto, Caspar David Friedrich, Lukas Cranach and David Hockney, come from around the globe and range from the 16th century to modern times. They are displayed in five sections that look at the various meanings of water—from its importance as a source of life, to its role in religion, technology, society and leisure. The exhibition is open daily from 10 am to 8 pm. Admission costs € 6 for adults, € 5 for pensioners and groups of 10 or more and € 3 for students. Anyone visiting on a Monday that is not
