History in the Making
Love Munich? Then you’ll be wanting to join in the celebrations to mark the founding of the city, which took place this month, 847 years ago. Originally a tiny monastic settlement, Munich was officially recognized for the first time by a court in Augsburg on June 14, 1158. It took its name from the expression “bei den Munichen,” or “by the monks.” This year, on June 11 and 12, the city center will come alive as artists take to the streets to mark the occasion. As well as a medieval crafts market on Odeonsplatz, the event will also feature live music on Marienplatz and a kids’ entertainment program in the Residenz. The festival runs from 10 am to 11 pm on Saturday and from 10 am to 10 pm on Sunday.
