American Icon?
Had a bit of a culture drought over the summer? If you’ve spent your weekends sitting by lakes instead of looking round galleries, now’s your chance to catch up on what you’ve missed with the 17th annual Open Art event. From September 9 to 11 some 65 galleries around the city will be opening their doors and hosting a series of special events to launch their new exhibitions after the summer break. A good starting point for visitors is the Rathausgalerie at Marienplatz, which features information on all participating galleries. Some highlights include a concert by the Chicks on Speed in the Schrannenhalle. The band, which features art and music in their performances, started out at the Munich Academy of Art, before achieving global success. They play on Saturday, September 10 at 10:30 pm. Or head to the Haus der Kunst for an exhibition of photos of Pamela Anderson. While the American glamour model and Baywatch star may not strike you as a likely muse for an arty exhibition, the photographer behind the works, Sante D’Orazio, is said to be the next Helmut Newton. The works “Pamela Anderson: American Icon” are on display September 8–15. See
