Fresh from the gourmet scene

It’s autumn—and you’d think these gastro folk had nothing better to do than open a few new bars. So what’s the theme of the moment? It’s a bit of a mixed bag this month. Let’s start in Schwabing, where Ö Eins (Herzogstrasse 81, Tel. 30 00 59 56) takes Austria upmarket. This swish bar / restaurant offers cocktails and Austrian specialties in stylish surroundings. Surprising stuff from the land of strudel and schnitzel…

Speaking of which, there’s a new Bavarian on the block—Die Wildsau (Balanstrasse 121, Tel. 45 22 26 52). As well as offering the usual pub-type food, this joint is set to become one of Giesing’s hottest party venues—at the bar’s opening event, hundreds of guests boogied through the night to the sounds of P1 DJ Nikias Hofmann. The bar also features a beer garden with seating for 500.

Yes, things are definitely looking up for Giesing. Another new bar—Living—has just opened in the district (Walchenseeplatz 4, Tel. 44 14 08 98). It may sound more like a magazine than somewhere to spend your Friday night, but if you’re after basic bar grub—think Asian soup, burgers and schnitzel—and relaxed surroundings, check it out. Landlord Sven Rodewald also has a self-confessed passion for absinthe—and has 12 different varieties to tempt those of you who can’t resist the charms of the little green fairy.

If flying with fairies is not your thing, how about swimming? DiveDelta (Aberle-strasse 29, Tel. 72 01 65 46), combines café / bar / bistro with a shop selling diving equipment. And for those underwater nerds among you, there’s even an aquarium for some, erm, fish spotting.

For those who think fish are for eating, head along to newly opened Saint, in Neuhausen. This Mediterranean bistro (Hedwigstrasse 9, Tel. 18 95 69 11) specializes in fish dishes, although it does offer a range of delicious-sounding meat courses, too. Prices, both for food and wine, are reasonable, and the restaurant runs a series of special food events. Check out its homepage, www.saint-restaurant.de, for details.

True saints among you might prefer the goodness on offer at Munich’s new juice bar, Tschuus (Reichenbachstrasse 5–7a, Tel. 57 87 57 82). Made with organic ingredients that are totally chemical-free, the heavenly shakes on offer here pack a potent punch of vitamins—the perfect antidote to one too many Helles. Just a glimpse at the menu (see www.tschuus.com) will set your mouth watering.

For a true post-hangover feast, there’s only one place to go: Batty Baristas coffee lounge in Schwabing (Barer Strasse 42) has launched a special, all-you-can-eat brunch for just € 5.50 per person. The offer runs from 10 am until 3 pm on Saturdays and holidays and from 10 am until 1 pm on Sundays.

Autumn marks the start of Munich’s culinary cabaret season—and the usual rivalry between the palazzo princes, Alfons Schuhbeck and Eckart Witzigmann. Schuhbeck’s coup this year was to open some two weeks ahead of his rival, with the premiere at the showground in Riem taking place at the beginning of October. Witzigmann, meanwhile, opened in the Olympiapark at the end of the month. With prices for both averaging at around the € 100 mark, it remains to be seen whose menu will woo the biggest crowds. But, if you’re sick of the bickering, check out the dinner show that starts at Das Schloss Theaterzelt this month. Altogether punkier and funkier than their aforementioned peers, star chefs Stefan Marquard and Wolfgang Weigler will be dishing up creative food, with a splattering of cabaret and music by musicians from the Bayerische Staatsoper. Not only does it sound far classier, but prices are a good € 20 lower than at the two biggies. There again, you could just save your money and go for a slap-up meal at Tantris, where, for some reason, Hans Haas has resisted the temptation to turn his food into a circus act… More details: www.dasschloss.com, www.schuhbeck.de, www.witzigmann-palazzo.de.
