Placido Domingo and his music friends kick off the World Cup
A musical extravaganza will kick off Munich’s World Cup celebrations this month. On June 6, three days before the tournament’s opening game between Costa Rica and Germany, the city’s top orchestras will get together for a concert to remember. The outdoor event, which takes place in the Olympic Stadium, features 450 performers from the Münchener Philharmoniker, the Bayerische Staatsorchester and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, and their conductors, Christian Thielemann, Zubin Mehta and Mariss Jansons. In addition, there will be appearances by world-class soloists, including tenor Placido Domingo, soprano Diana Damrau and pianist Lang Lang. The program will feature works from composers ranging from Munich composers Richard Strauss and Carl Orff to the likes of Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin. Tickets cost between € 25 and € 124 and are available from München Ticket (Tel. 66 06 30). For more information, see
