Daytrip Tip
Every year, from April to the first week of November, a remarkable spot on Bavaria’s landscape opens its gates to the public. An ideal destination for a daytrip with the whole family, the open-air farm museum Freilichtmuseum Glentleiten, situated between Murnau and Kochel am See on more than 60 acres in the scenic alpine foothills, allows visitors a chance to see what life was like on Upper Bavarian farms over the past several centuries. Some 40 original historic buildings—including barns, working mills, workshops, homesteads, alpine huts, a general store and laborers’ quarters, to name a few—have been resited here. Furnished with period furniture and accessories, they paint a charming picture of life on the southern German farm of yesteryear. Various demonstrations put on by blacksmiths, lace-makers and other craftsmen can be viewed here daily. Exhibitions and special events are held throughout the year. If you’re feeling a bit peckish, the museum boasts a charming Bavarian restaurant, located in an old barn on the premises. Admission costs € 5 for adults or € 10 for two adults and their own children up to 15 years of age. Children under six are free. See www.glentleiten.de for more details. TIP: Once you’ve finished your tour, you may wish to head to other parts for a nice meal. At the nearby Kreut-Alm restaurant (www.kreutalm.de), which sits even 200 meters higher than the museum, you will find outstanding Bavarian cuisine, made from mostly local products, and an extensive vegetarian menu, all at reasonable prices. The exquisite alpine view is free.
