Munich's Annual Filmfest

Since it began in 1983, Filmfest München— a weeklong extravaganza of new film and documentary screenings at cinemas that make up what organizers call the “Movie Mile”—has become, next to the Berlinale, Germany’s largest festival, boasting more than 1,300,000 attendees to date. This year’s event takes place a bit later in the summer than usual, from July 15 to 22. Though at press time the complete schedule of films, dates and times was unavailable, details of several entries were released, including 2002 Young German Cinema Award winner Michael Hofmann’s latest film, Eden, a movie about food, love and betrayal starring TV moderator and Grimme prize winner Charlotte Rosch. While drumming his way around the world in the 1970s and 1980s, Police percussionist Stewart Copeland carried around a Super-8 camera. The result is the behind-the-scenes documentary Everyone Stares: The Police Inside Out. The film, “a look back without anger,” according to film organizers, is edited from copious reels kept in a shoebox for a number of years. New categories featured this year will include American Independents, Cinema québecois, Kinderfilmfest and German TV Movies. Tickets go on sale July 3 at www.filmfest-muenchen.de. Telephone reservations will be taken from July 8 to 20. Advance sales will be made at Gasteig from July 8 to 14. Advance tickets cost € 6; tickets purchased the day of the screening are € 7.50 or € 6 for seniors and students.
