Traumstadt Schwabing: Oswald Malura at the Valentin Museum
Painter, gallery-owner and art patron Oswald Malura (1906–2003) was a synonym for art in Schwabing during the 1950s. Indeed, Malura was essential to the post-war rebirth of a vibrant creative scene in Munich’s bohemian enclave. He established the first post-war gallery and was the first to display art by the group “Gruppe SPUR” in Munich. The famed “Traumstadt” artists’ collective held meetings at Malura’s home on Kaulbachstrasse. In his other home—an old farmhouse at Ammersee—he painted and taught in an atelier, which now houses the Oswald Malura Foundation (www.oswald-malura-stiftung.de). The present collection, directed by his son Andrew, includes more than 150 paintings and artifacts. In celebration of the hundredth anniversary of his birth, the Valentin Museum inside Isartor will host “Traumstadt Schwabing,” an exploration of Malura’s life and his milieu, from now until October 17. Opening hours—a tribute to Karl Valentin’s comic perspective—are Mon.–Tues., 11:01 am–5:29 pm; Fri. and Sat., 11:01 am–5:59 pm; Sun. 10:01 am–5:59 pm. Each first Friday of the month, the museum stays open until 9:59 pm. More information about the museum is available at
