Dear Reader,
Though German Bundestag members can’t decide whether smoking is a treasured right of the electorate, Americans are further along: The tobacco lobby there is losing the battle to prevent smoking bans and, despite all of their dire prognoses, restaurant profits are rising. In Germany, the realization of such an outcome will, unfortunately, take a bit longer. To that end, this issue includes a selection of smoke-free restaurants. Don’t let the power struggles of the German politicians prevent you from enjoying the pleasure of a good dinner! There is also a rumor going around that some beer tent keepers are thinking about the possibility of smoke-free zones. To that we can only say congratulations—and please do!
In the past few weeks we’ve received many letters praising the new content and structure of MF. We’re really happy about that and thank you for the comments. We’ve also received, though, comments from a few readers who miss the longer articles. Since the decision to change our format was also made based on financial necessity, we kindly request your understanding. The partly torn-off cover of the June edition, however, was not the result of cost-cutting, but simple human error: The binder set the stapler on the wrong setting. Unfortunately, that was only discovered after the magazine was already in the mail. We are sorry for any inconvenience this caused.
