Against Kandinsky
Especially in Munich, his one-time stomping grounds, Expressionist artist Wassily Kandinsky is a lionized figure. Although the significance of his contributions to modern art is indisputable, a new exhibition at the Villa Stuck aims to illuminate his artistic milieu with paintings, drawings, stage designs, photographs and films by artists who were, theoretically, “Against Kandinsky.” Specifically, the exhibition concerns itself with the Expressionists’ break with the increasingly geometric abstract art in the early 20th century. Though the boundaries were never delineated—Kandinsky himself painted in both styles—the impressive selection of works on display, such as those by Alexander Rodchenko, Jackson Pollock and Frank Stella, provides a comprehensive overview of the tumultuous world of American and European art at the beginning of the last century.
