Bobsled in Berchtesgaden
When the Autobahn has lost its bite, adrenaline junkies can get their fix in Berchtesgaden, a small town on the Austrian border, 150 km south of Munich. Berchtesgaden is home to a formidable 1.2 km bobsled run that has hosted World and European Cup tournaments. In addition to nerves of steel, those who tackle the incline injury-free generally have the benefit of years of practice. The Berchtesgaden Tourist Office has made it easier for everyone to have fun risking their lives this winter by offering piloted runs for € 80. All you have to do is sit back (and definitely not relax) while an experienced driver steers you through 14 curves at speeds up to 120 km/hr. Survivors receive a bobsled diploma and bragging rights. Call the tourist office at (086) 52 65 60 40 or email rennbob@berchtesgadener-land.com to make reservations for any Saturday or Sunday from now until the end of February. Trains run frequently to Berchtesgaden from the Munich Hauptbahnhof. The journey takes about 2.5 hours, and tickets cost € 22–32. Or, buy a € 19 Bayern-Ticket that covers you for a day of travel throughout the region.
