Bavarian King Ludwig II had dreams of building a spectacular Opera House in Munich to host productions of his close friend Richard Wagner. The king’s subjects, however, were wary of the scandals surrounding the composer, and of his growing influence on the monarch. Especially because the King’s many architectural endeavors had already drained the city’s coffers, Munich passed on the project, which was taken up, famously, by Bayreuth.
Where exactly was the spot where Ludwig II envisioned his temple of the Muses? Which Opera House architect never saw his Munich landmark realized?
