V-Day Munich

Even in the 21st century, violence against women and girls continues to grow: Four million females are trafficked annually, one million girls enter the sex trade each year, and thousands of women die in “honor killings.” V-Day is a worldwide grass-roots campaign founded in 2001 to end violence against women and girls. (The “V” stands for “victory,” “vagina,” and “Valentine’s Day,” when it was first held.) Each year, local volunteers produce benefit performances of Eve Ensler’s award-winning play “The Vagina Monologues” to educate audiences about this reality, and raise money to stop it. In six years, the campaign has raised more than $20 million. This year, Laurie Norquist has organized a Munich version of the event, with the substantial support of IMMA e.V., Ms. Dagmar Hahn of the Munich Reithalle, Dr. Joachim Kaske from Camera Artis, Joe Winter TV and Film Production, and Electronic Theater Controls. Local English-speaking actresses will perform “The Vagina Monologues” on March 8 and 9 at 8 pm in the Reithalle (Hessstr. 132). Alternately hilarious and heartbreaking, the play is good theater for a great cause. Tickets will cost € 15, and € 12 for students.
