Amberg Luftmuseum

When visitors to Amberg’s newest museum say that it’s all hot air, they’re paying it a compliment: The unique museum is dedicated to exploring all things air-related. Housed in a historic 14th-century building, the museum hosts lectures, readings, and changing exhibitions about design, architecture and art. Its current featured exhibitions will close on March 26. “Snowmen, women, and animals” displays over 150 photographs of Bavarian snowmen collected over two years. As climate change makes the air warmer, the museum believes, recording such endangered creations is all but a social duty. An inflatable snowman, of course, stands guard over the room. The other major exhibit is “Airbag,” an air art performance by Walter Schreiner. A mountain of plastic bags inflates and deflates in time to music issued from loudspeakers around the room, making rhythm visible and air rhythmic. Entry to the museum costs € 3.50 for adults, € 2 for children, and € 8 for families. Amberg is a two-hour train ride from Munich Hauptbahnhof. Purchase a Bayern Ticket for € 19 (€ 27 for groups of up to five people), and be covered for one day of travel on all of Bavaria’s transportation nets, including S-, U-, Strassenbahn, and buses.
