Electrical outlet
In keeping with this year’s pre-millennium hoopla, Siemens, German electronics and electrical engineering giant, has built a brand-new home for its hi-tech exhibitions. The company, which designs everything from vacuum cleaners to medical instruments, has moved its permanent collection from Prannerstrasse to the new, grand edifice
on Oskar-von-Miller-Ring, designed by famed German architect Richard Meier. Surrounded by Munich’s most respected museums — the Bavarian National Museum, Haus der Kunst, the Pinakotheks and the Deutsches Museum — SiemensForum
offers visitors a look at the latest innovations in communications, energy transportation, industry, the environment and health. Traveling exhibitions will also be held in the white concrete-and-glass structure. Until January 9, works by contestants who entered this year’s Prix Ars Electronica, an annual electronics competition, will be on display at the site.
Interactive art, World Wide Web designs, digital music and computer animation highlight the elaborate multimedia event. And what plans does Siemens have for the rest of the newest five-story dot on Munich’s landscape? “The future,” answers Siemens spokesman Professor Doctor Wilfried Feldenkirchen. In the year 2000, SiemensForum will be the locale of numerous discussions on technology: in symposiums, lectures and special shows, all with the motto “the future begins with dialogue.” For a preview of scheduled exhibitions visit the museum
