Girls' Day 2007

Despite achieving grades that are higher than their male counterparts, German females still lag behind in many areas. They are underrepresented in universities, and continue to choose from a small number of traditionally female careers. Just over half, in fact, choose from only 10 careers that include such positions as hair dresser, nurse, or secretary. In response to this problem, the German government organized a special “Girls’ Day” in 2001, and more than 508,170 girls in grades five to ten have since taken part in the annual event. Participants widen their horizons in laboratories, factories, or other high-tech work environments. This year, the nationwide event will take place on April 26.
