Marc Riboud
The photographs of French artist Marc Riboud are as unique as his life: A wizened old man waving at the camera, the iron trestles of the Eiffel Tower, a Chinese boy fleeing an unseen pursuer through rubble. After taking part in the French Resistance, Riboud briefly studied engineering before befriending famous photographers Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa. The two convinced him to take up photojournalism, and he first traveled for Life magazine in 1952. Since then he has roamed the world in search of the perfect shot: Tibet, Cambodia, Mexico, China, Vietnam, and more. Though such regions often offered up images of war, poverty, or political oppression, Riboud also captured quotidian scenes that reverberate with a similar intensity. Until April 28, the Galerie Stephen Hoffman (Prannerstr. 5) will display a selection of such works from “Fifty Years of Photography.†The gallery is open Tuesday through Friday, 11 am to 1 pm, and 2 pm to 7 pm. Saturdays the gallery is open from 11 am to 4 pm.
