Opera Premieres

The annual Opera Festival is still weeks away, but two new Munich premieres will keep fans satisfied until the summer months. Luigi Nono’s Intolleranza incited riots when it first premiered in Venice in 1961. There’s hardly any concern that the audience will have a similar reaction to its anti-Fascist message when it premieres at Munich’s Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz on May 13 at 8 pm.

A few weeks later on May 28, the Bayerische Staatsoper will present a new production of one of Verdi’s early works: Maria Luisa. Italian conductor Massimo Zanetti will also make his Munich debut as he leads Krassimira Stoyanova and Ramon Vargas as the young lovers Rodolfo and Luisa Miller. Claus Guth—one of the most important contemporary directors—will over-see the production. Tickets are on sale through www.staatsoper.de for € 14–193.
