Stadtsgründungsfest

In 1158, Henry XII (known as the Lion) built a toll bridge over the Isar to capitalize on the salt trade. With that, the city of Munich was officially established. Plans are already in the works for a huge 850th anniversary celebration next year, but the annual Stadtgründungsfest (celebration of the city’s founding) still promises to be a great time this year. On Saturday, June 16, from 10 am to 11 pm, and on Sunday, June 17, from 10 am to 10 pm, the city will host a party all throughout the city center. Performers both traditional and modern will take the stage at Marienplatz. More than 100 artisans will display their wares on Theatiner- and Residenzstrasse, and a Handicraft Village on Odeonsplatz will give visitors the opportunity to watch the creation of such pieces firsthand. Kids will have a better time enjoying special programming in the courtyards of the Residenz: exploring medieval camp life with knights, or riding a horse-drawn carriage. The Toy Museum in the Altes Rathaus will also grant kids free entry that day. <<<
