June 2007
Film Festivals
Often called “the Austin of Bavaria,” "Athens on the Isar," or “the northernmost city in Italy,” Munich is irrefutably the “Hollywood of Germany,” when it hosts the country’s largest summer film festival each June. While not as star-studded as the Berlinale, the Munich Film Festival is comfortable and audience-focused. This year, more than 200 films will screen across the city from June 22 to 30. Such traditional sections as New German Cinema and Nouvéau Cinéma Francais are supplemented by offerings from Latin America and Asia. This year will also see a special Werner Herzog retrospective featuring all of the director’s 52 films. See www.filmfest-muenchen.de for a full schedule. Before the big festival, warm up with the International Short Film Festival, in Munich from June 14 to 20. Each night, Mathäser will host a screening of the world’s best contemporary short films. Each one
is filmed or subtitled in English.
