Video Art and Opera

This year’s opera festival will feature Munich premieres of several works, but also the debut of an entirely new art concept. In cooperation with the Pinakothek der Moderne, Kent Nagano and the Bayerische Staatsoper have commissioned Californian video installation artist Diana Thater to create a piece in conjunction with the festival. The piece, “...drawling and stretching and fainting in coils...” will be shown at the Pinakothek der Moderne and National Theater from June 29 to July 31. Thater, six other artists, saxophonist Ben Wendel and trumpeter Till Brönner developed an innovative blend of music and modern art centered around the story Alice in Wonderland. (The opera by Korean composer Unsuk Chin will also be staged during the festival.) An off-site satellite of the exhibition will also be screened at the Osram Seven Screens, which can’t be missed when driving on the Mittlerer Ring in Giesing. Called “Off with their Heads,” it follows Alice’s trippy chessgame in extreme close-up.
