Open-Air Movies

Munich residents can watch the stars under the stars this summer as several annual open-air series start up throughout the city. Kino, Mond, und Sterne (Movies, Moon, and Stars) will screen movies every night until August 19, with a break from July 20 to 22. Audiences sit in Westpark’s ampitheater, where the star-dappled lake provides a backdrop for the giant screen. Tickets cost € 5, and the schedule of mostly newer releases is available at www.kino-mond-sterne.de. Kino am Pool (Movies at the Pool) takes place right in the city at Schwabing’s atmospheric Ungererbad, until July 1, and again, July 18 to August 12. The program shows recent releases like the Devil Wears Prada mixed in with such classics as Casablanca, and Fridays are family movie night. See www.kinoampool.de for the full schedule. You either can rent a chair or you bring your own chair or blanket. Tickets cost € 5. Shorter in duration but by far the most impressive event is Kino am Königsplatz. From July 16 to 23, a screen will be sandwiched in between the imposing pillars of Klenze’s Propyläen. Tickets cost € 6.50, or € 9 for a seat. A full schedule of showings is available at www.kinoopenair.de. All movies begin at dusk, and weather updates are available on each website. (Films are in German.)
