July 2007
Kaltenberg Jousting Tournament
The good old summertime will be positively
medieval at the Kaltenberg Jousting Tournament, this July 6–8, 13–15, and 20–23. The Kaltenberg Castle, just 50 km west of Munich, provides an impressive backdrop to the just as jaw-dropping festival grounds, which sprawl over 100,000 square meters. Jesters, fire-swallowers, acrobats, and magicians perform on seven stages and wander through the crowds. Visitors can watch blacksmiths, glass engravers, and holistic healers at work in the medieval market. The main attraction, however, is the two-hour arena battle between the evil Black Knight and the Bavarian hero. (Be aware that this year audience members will choose the winner, and you might have to tell the kids that the good guy doesn’t always win.) Evening shows on Friday and Saturday begin
at 4:30 pm and end at 12:30 am. Sunday
matinees are from 11:30 am to 7:30 pm.
Tickets cost between € 17 and € 39, and can be purchased by calling (01805 11 33 13, or visiting www.ritterturnier.de (also in English). You’ll find a wealth of information about special performances, and jousters there, as well as tips on where to buy your own suit of armor.
