Children’s cafes take kid-friendly to a new level: Often adults are in the minority! It’s a simple idea of marrying a decent cup of coffee for mom and an environment suitable for tiny hands.
Kindercafe Freistunde (Am Glockenbach 12) is decorated with a clothesline of tots’ frocks for sale. Moms (and at least one dynamic dad) nibble tasty gingerbread and cherry cakes or brownies while perusing the bulletin board full of information on play groups, parent-child dance classes and nanny requests. The spot is surprisingly quiet and mothers are very friendly. Simple noshes include fruit skewers. Open daily 10 am–6 pm.
Schneewittchen am Glockenbach (Am Glockenbach 8) has a rather shocking décor for a restaurant catering to kids. Its all-white seating and pillows inspire the little ones to behave so they get to come back. Why? Candles are shaped like tarts, ice-pop makers are on sale and there is an impressive assortment of sweets and sodas and an entire backroom full of neat-o toys.
Tafel und Schwafel (Augusten-str. 80) is a full-service café-restaurant in Schwabing that has received rave reviews for its desserts. The chocolate cake soothes the beast in any child. Sweets are the big draw. Open Mon.–Sat., 8 am–10 pm; Sun. 10 am–5 pm.
In addition, parents’ also recommend Sirup, Preysingstr. 18, in Haidhausen, which is open until 6 pm weekdays and 4 pm on weekends.
New in Town The five-star The Charles Hotel (Sophienstr. 28, Tel. 544 555 0), one of the design gems of the Rocco Forte Collection, opens October 4. Gianni Russo, recently of the Ritz-Carlton Doha, will be the chef of the Italian restaurant Davvero. The Charles Hotel is just a stone’s throw from Königsplatz and the restaurant looks on to the Old Botanical Gardens.
Happy Halloween! The Mandarin Oriental Hotel (Neuturm-str. 1, Tel. 290 980) gives you a reason to skip trick-or-treating this year. On Wednesday, October 31, the hotel offers a Halloween dinner in its restaurant Mark’s, celebrating the pumpkin. The menu includes lobster with a potato pumpkin-seed terrine and caviar crème, a creative sole and pumpkin “lasagna” and a pumpkin parfait. A five-course meal costs €135.
