November 2007

Viniculture Celebrations

Travel & Wine

Wine-lovers and gourmands will flock again this year to South Tyrol’s International Wine Festival and Culinaria in Meran, Italy, from November 10 to 12. Almost 500 wineries from around the globe will attend, including 101 estates from the International Top Selected wines, as well as nearly 70 bio wineries. A tidbit that whets wine-connoisseurs whistles: A 2006 Bordeaux from Pichon Comtesse will be available that is described by one critic as “just like the 1996 vintage, but better.” Another highlight is the auction of the “white gold from Alba,” the white truffle, which takes place with direct bidding connections from Hong Kong and Berlin, in the new GourmetArena at the Thermal Square in Meran. Anyone can bid! www.meranowinefestival.com The weekend Festival is the culmination of a 3-week luxury food and wine showcase called “VinoCulture” held in nearby Tirol Dorf. With the motto “Made in the Alps,” this show will focus on wines from the Swiss Canton of Valais and edible oils for the alps, such as pumpkin seed, grape seed, and thistle oil, among other delicacies. www.vinoculti.com

If you don’t envision a trek south of the alps, Germany has several wine festivals in November, a great time to travel minus the usual wine-fest crowds. Among options are the Rheingau Open at Schloss Johannisberg, Rheingau, November 3 and the Riesling Gala at Kloster Eberbach, Rheingau, November 11. Closer to home, the Francona region celebrates its viniculture and awards prizes to the region’s best at the “Ball of the Francona Wines” gala on November 11. See www.weinland-franken.de. A few German wines from the 2007 season are actually opened in the month of November, just as the majority of creations from the fall harvest are entering the bottles. A handy year-round tool for supporters of German wines is www.deutscheweine.de. This official website of the German Wine Institute has an English version and gives you a list of festivals, wine facts and a complete glossary. <<<
