What Next, Gianni Schicchi?
Five adults and a child wake up after a car accident. They don’t know what happened; they don’t know where they are; worst of all, they have no idea who they are. Carter Elliott—one of the most distinguished American contemporary composers—has transformed this absurd scenario into a one-act opera. What Next? (1997) is Elliott’s first opera, composed just before his 90th birthday. The libretto was written by acclaimed music critic Paul Griffiths. Together with Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi (1918), What Next? will be performed at the Prinzregententheater on December 4 and 9 at 8 pm. Tickets cost € 9–31 and are available at all VVK outlets.
