Retrospective of Collector
Heinrich Thannhauser opened his “Modern Gallery” on Thea-tinerstrasse in 1909. He quickly gained broad recognition through exhibits of the great French impressionists Manet, Degas and Gauguin, as well as by presenting established artists and new talents from Germany. The
Jewish Museum in Munich has dedicated in its sixth exhibition series “Sammelbilder” to a showing of Thannhauser’s former collection Heinrich Thannhauser died in 1935 while preparing for his emigration to Switzerland. His son Justin took refuge in the US and was able to save parts of his father’s precious art collection from the Nazis. In 1963, he donated all the pictures to the New York Guggenheim Museum. From there, one object that has been absent from Munich for the past 90 years will return to the city on loan: The “Yellow Cow” (1911) by Munich artist Franz Marc. The exhibition on Thannhauser, noteworthy early-20th-century Munich resident, and significant objects from his collection will be on display through May 25. <<<
