February 2008
Editorial
Dear Reader,
In the past month, Munich witnessed an unfortunate accumulation of brutal incidents at U-Bahn stations. Suddenly headlines on tabloids across the region questioned how safe our beautiful city really is. Some politicians tried to catch the momentum of the situation. They could bring safety to us all, they claimed, if we’d just contribute a vote in the upcoming elections. Luckily these overambitious politicos and their breathless journalistic compatriots have been unsuccessful in creating real unrest here in Munich. Of course Munich is a large city, where a bit of street smarts is invaluable. Most of the time, however, one can move through the city without giving any thought to possible danger. Thus, true Münchner have no trouble withstanding the “culture of fear;” at least when it comes to the city in which we live.
To wit, Munich has also been the subject of glowing reviews in recent issues of other newspapers and magazines. Art magazine Monopol just published a whole issue declaring Munich the new German center of art and design. Simultaneously, ultrahip popmag Vice crowned the city Europe’s new hot spot for hipsters and electronic music aficionados. Elite lifestyle magazine Monocle of the International Herald Tribune has declared Munich simply the world’s best city to live in, because of its perfect symbiosis of savoir vivre and high-tech.
All of those publications have a point, but their proclamations are not a new phenomenon. For almost twenty years, MUNICH FOUND has delivered a monthly demonstration of the city’s vibrant cultural life, and we are happy to continue writing about the many exciting facets of Munich. Yet another selection of worthwhile events—from traditional Fasching celebrations to experimental dance performances—awaits you this month. While you’re still browsing through our February issue, the MUNICH FOUND team already will be busy working to figure out what will make Munich the world’s most liveable city in March.
Sincerely,
Katharina Adler
