April 2008
Munich Biennale
Apart from acclaimed composers such as Hans Werner Henze, Aribert Reimann or Philip Glass, very few creators of contemporary music theater make it to the major opera stages these days. For the past twenty years, the Munich Biennale has provided a platform for aspiring composers to present their works to a broad audience. Some of them have gone on to forge a path to opera houses in Europe, Asia and the Americas. From April 17 through May 3, the festival will present multifaceted approaches to modern music theater. Among the scores of world premiere composers, Jens Joneleit, who studied composition and painting in the U.S., will present his opera Piero–The End of Night based on a novel by Alfred Andersch. Another project by Enno Poppe and Marcel Bayer will adapt Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe. For further information on all composers, their compositions and a full schedule of performances, visit
