State Graphic Collection
In 1758, Elector Carl Theodor of Palatine founded a drawing and etching cabinet at his castle in Mannheim, which was transferred to Munich 40 years later in the course of the Bavarian succession. When secularization set in, the collection experienced a significant growth, which stoked the reputation of the State Graphic Collection as one of Germany’s most renowned collections. To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung, the graphic section of the Pinakothek der Moderne will present a comprehensive selection of its 400,000 papers, spanning from the 15th century to contemporary period. Instead of arranging the exhibition in chronological order or according to artistic schools, the exhibition will pay tribute to the patrons and promoters of the collection, whose individual approach has given the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung its unique profile. This specific curatorial choice is also a statement stressing the importance of personal and public commitment to maintain and develop museums today. The exhibition will be on display from April 10 through June 29. <<<
