April 2008

Jim Avignon

He produces art on the assembly line—4.37 pieces a day, he claims—and he would rather sell a thousand paintings for a dollar than one piece for a thousand. Jim Avignon is a German purveyor of pop art, who established himself as a painter during the legendary techno and rave era in the beginning of the 1990s. Even though his work is rooted in the hedonism and speed of club culture, Avignon’s expressive paintings often refer to political problems of the present (see this month’s cover). Combining live painting with music, Avignon also appears on international stages as the one-man band Neoangin—the word refers to a super sweet sore throat pill of the same name. The music style of Neoangin uses the basics of electronic music, fusing them with French chanson, new wave, electroclash and hip-hop. In April, Jim Avignon will present both his pictures and his music in Munich. From April 18 through May 24 Jörg Heitsch will display the artist’s work at his gallery (Reichenbachstr. 14). Those interested in purchasing a picture are recommended to attend the opening night, as Avignon’s art will surely find a lot of buyers. Those interested in his furioso live shows, however, should keep the night of April 19 free. Starting at 9 pm, Jim Avignon will perform songs taken from his latest Neoangin CD “the happy hobo and the return of the freaks” at the Neues Haus of the Münchner Kammerspiele. In accordance with Avignon’s credo, tickets for this concert, with Berlin entertainer Nova Huta opening, will only cost € 9. They can be purchased at all VVK outlets or the Münchner Kammerspiele box office. <<<
