On September 5, 1972, Dr. Georg Sieber—head psychologist of the Munich police and the Olympic security team—was on duty when terrorists took Israeli Olympic athletes hostage. Sieber had been hired by the police and the IOC to draft hypothetical scenarios that could endanger the Games, and to prepare the security team accordingly. One of these scenarios—Sieber gave it the number 26—was an almost exact prediction of the tragic event. Artist Sarah Morris has interviewed Sieber on what happened on that black September day, interweaving the eye-witness account with observation pictures of demonstrators by the Munich police, photos of the 1972 Olympic Summer Games and panoramic views of the Olympiapark. The movie 1972, on display at the Lenbachhaus until August 3, shows a subjective interpretation of those events 36 years ago. Its aesthetics and content distinguish the film from common documentaries. <<<
