Alvar Aalto

Perhaps no artifact is a better key to unraveling architectural intention than an unfinished sketch: The first ephemeral scribblings often reveal a project’s underlying vision better than the realized edifices. In particular, drawings by Alvar Aalto—one of the most distinguished architects of the 20th century—are of the highest artistic quality. The exhibition “Drawn in Sand” will show 120 drawings and 18 models by the Finnish architect and designer, constructed for projects, which were never built. The impressive works span more than fifty years of Aalto’s work, including a piazza in Montreal, a Columbus memorial in Santo Domingo (pictured) and art museums for the cities of Shiraz and Tallinn. The exhibition will be on display at the architecture section of the Pinakothek der Moderne from June 12 through September 21. <<<
