Strawberry Picking

In supermarkets where Lebkuchen are on the shelves by early autumn, seasonal fruits also seem to be available throughout the year. Only—in contrast to pastries—fruits bought off-season often taste disappointing and dull. One way to enjoy the great taste of fresh-picked and fully developed crop without paying through the nose is to pick it yourself. At least when it comes to strawberries, there are many fields in the Munich area that extend their invitations to private harvesting. The closest fields to the city are in Oberhaching (Lanzhaarer Strasse), Taufkirchen (Münchner Strasse), Trudering (Bajuwarenstrasse) and Perlach (Unterhachinger Strasse). More fields and news on picking conditions can be found at www.erdbeeren-wolf.de. The Hofreiter family also offers raspberry and blueberry fields, which are listed at www.erdbeer.de. Hungry harvesters might want to keep this fact in mind: Strawberries start to lose some of their aroma five hours after picking, so it is best to eat them as soon as possible, even on the field, where eating is permitted as long as you can stomach it. <<<
