Medieval Entertainment
Each year, the Kaltenberg Castle near Geltendorf celebrates its medieval roots with the
Kaltenberger Ritterturnier—one of the largest knights’ tournaments in the world. Once again, from July 5 through 27, an eight-hour program will present the culture of the Middle Ages and a large medieval market will help you take some history home. Among the many attractions, however, the highlight is always the castle’s tournament, during which knights will send each other flying from their horses in a joust. During the Kaltenberg Jester’s Night (July 18), armour will be put aside and replaced by dunce caps. Purchase tickets in advance at (01805) 11 33 13. To get to the tournament by car, take the A96 and exit at Windach, from where signposts will show you the way. You can also take S8 to Geltendorf and then hop on one of the shuttle buses. At
www.ritterturnier.de, further information and clips of past festivals are available.
The long tradition of medieval theater plays will be presented at the baroque stage
Comedihütten from July 26 through August 31. This year’s highlight will be the performances of a knights’ play by Romanticist author Joseph Schmalz. Be aware that the acting will not adapt anything from modern theater practice, so expect historic freeze poses, swords clashing and fanfare blows, mixed up with a little irony. The Comedihütten is located in Kiefersfelden. Tickets and a schedule are available at
