Ballsaison 2000-Dancing in Munich during February
Stepping Out From now to the end of Fasching — a.k.a. Carnival or Mardi Gras — Munich will be hitting the dance floor. “Ball Saison 2000,” no longer just for high society, is a cavalcade of parties — waltzes, wine and wit served up at the Deutsches Theater until March 10. So, don your tux or gown and get your ball bearings. Here is a small sampling of February’s festivities: Feb. 4, Grand Fête d’Or, a festival of the Munich Jeunesse Dorée. Here, the crowd will move to the sounds some of the of the city’s best DJs. Wardrobe: festive to decadent. Ticket prices: DM 25-35. Feb. 5, Münchner G’schichten 2000, a large ball put on by the CSU political party. Dr. Edmund Stoiber will be present, along with two orchestras. A raffle will be held. Wardrobe: formal. Ticket prices: DM 29-158. Feb. 6, Ball der 1000 Torten, sponsored by Munich bakers and confectioners. Cake raffle and a swing orchestra. Wardrobe: eveningwear. Ticket prices: DM 35-110. Feb. 12., Carnaval do Brasil, a huge Brazilian costume ball. Ticket prices: DM 34-64. Feb. 16., Der Chrysanthemenball, a ball that raises money for needy children, and has been for 75 years. Guest star: Howard Carpendale. Orchestra and adjacent disco party. Presentation of 2000’s debutants. Dress: formal. Ticket prices: DM 50-260. Feb. 19, Ball der Nationen, where you can be a spectator of the European standard dance championship. Dress: formal. Ticket prices: DM 45-210. Feb. 25, The Pyjama Party, where live bands, live acts and DJs from Radio Energy get the party going. Wardrobe: funky (or elegant P.J.s?) Ticket prices: DM 25-40.
