The 11th annual International Spring Book Week (March 15-26) includes readings, lectures and panel discussions by renowned authors from around the world
The 11th annual International Spring Book Week (March 15-26) should be a highlight in every book-lover’s calendar. With readings, lectures and panel discussions involving renowned authors from around the world, it is a forum for contemporary literature. In the past, the event centered around one particular country, but Spring Book Week 2000 organizers have chosen a much broader, more dynamic approach:“Weltstädte – Stadtwelten” (world cities – city worlds). Literature from and about the world’s metropolises promises to be an exciting topic, to be discussed by authors from such disparate places as Berlin, São Paolo, London, Hong Kong, Moscow and New York. Among the authors representing the English-speaking cities are Nik Cohn (New York), Robert McLiam Wilson (Belfast), Mo Hayder (London) and Geoff Nicholson (London and New York). In a series of readings authors will explore the individual character of their respective cities. Daily panel discussions and lectures address broader questions, such as how a city can function as a protagonist in works of fiction, what it means to live in a city that turns into a theater of war or how concepts like virtual reality and the global village could change traditional views of the city. Features of the Spring Book Week are lectures in the Munich subway and city tours, whereby foreign authors show locals Munich through their eyes.
