Tax Brass

Tax time — the deadline to file for Americans is April 15 with an automatic extension to June 15 for those living in Europe

It’s that time of year again. We’ll pull out shoeboxes crammed full of receipts and rack our brains trying to remember just why that pizza delivery bill is business related. Tax time — the deadline to file for Americans is April 15 with an automatic extension to June 15 for those living in Europe. To help unravel the complications of filing as an expat, Robert Walcott, a taxpayer service specialist from the Internal Revenue Service’s New York office, will be in Munich from March 7 to 9 to assist U.S. citizens with their 1999 income tax returns. The IRS official will see people at the U.S. Consulate on a first-come-first-serve basis from 8 to 11 and 13:30 to 16 each day. For those who can’t make it to the Consulate, the Internal Revenue Service office in Berlin also answers tax-related questions. Call (030) 8305 1140 Monday to Friday from 9 to 13 or send a fax to (030) 8305 1145. As the phone line is often busy, a fax is the most efficient way to communicate with their office. The conversion rate from DM to U.S. dollars for 1999 tax returns is DM 1.8377. <<< lm
